Dyson Vacuum Cleaners - Roomba Killer Soon?
How about a line of robotic Dyson vacuum cleaners to add to their already “market share grabbing” DC vacuums? It may not be far off. Dyson is advertising on their site for roboticists and may be trying to enter the robotic vacuum market soon.
However, it’s interesting to note that Dyson is looking for specific experience in “navigation and localisation systems knowledge” (Kalman filters, SLAM)” and “computer vision experience”. Both of those technologies would be needed in a robotic vacuum that was intelligent enough to tell its own location within a space and be able to map out that space in real-time.
This hints they are perhaps going to raise the bar in robotic room vacuums currently being offered by Roomba and introduce robot vacuums capable of mapping out a room or perhaps a whole floor to aid in cleaning. Current models of Roomba vacuums don’t map at all, they vacuum while continually changing direction until a whole ara is probably vacuumed.
The Electrolux Trilobite does map out a room by traversing the exterior walls and uses ultrasound sensors during vacuuming to locate and avoid objects while added items to it’s mapped database.
Given how Dyson like to come up with very innovative ways to solve everyday problems, it should be interesting to watch how this progresses.
